Il padiglione sull'Acqua

Silvia Siberini & Stefano Croci

The pavilion on the water – Il padiglione sull'acqua – refers to the Brion Tomb, a majestic building constructed in the 1970s by visionary Italian architect Carlo Scarpa. Although originally from Venice, this artist was deeply fascinated and inspired by Japanese culture and its reflections on beauty and harmony with sacred nature.

The Brion Tomb is considered his masterpiece and a true jewel of modern architecture. It was designed as a bridge between Italy and Japan, a window to the East from the West. The Japanese inspiration was not only aesthetic but also philosophical and poetic, as Carlo Scarpa was a follower of the great poet Matsuo Bashō, whose footsteps he would follow to Japan. Unfortunately, he was never able to complete his journey: he died in an accident before reaching his final destination. In accordance with his wishes, he was buried in the Brion Tomb, his final work.

By taking us on a sensory and contemplative stroll through the maze of the ‘pavilion on the water’, the filmmakers invite us to immerse ourselves in the architect’s world. Through the words of Japanese philosopher Ryosuke Ōhashi, the architect's son, and his former students and collaborators, the concrete monument is brought to life, allowing us to discover a fascinating artist.
